What does blooming mean in bath bombs? If you have been making or using bath bombs for some time, you may have heard of the term “blooming.” Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have blown up this bath bomb technique, and for a good reason. The blooming process will allow you to enjoy your bath bomb more solely based on its stunning colors.
So, what does blooming mean in bath bombs? Well, blooming is the process of adding your bath bomb dye to hot water and mixing it with sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda. Doing this will draw a stronger color out of the dye, allowing your bath bomb to “bloom” or “blossom” when used.
The reason blooming has become so popular is due to the bath bomb dyes. When you order or purchase bath bomb dyes, you could easily mistake them for other colors. Dyes have a darker, duller color in their dry form than what they would be in the water.
You may think you got the wrong color if you ordered it online. Trust us, you likely received the right color, but the dye is just muted when it comes to color. For this reason, blooming bath bombs have been a great technique to draw those stronger colors out.
If you’ve made bath bombs before, you’ll know adding too much water can dilute the dye, causing the color to be less than impressive when used. By blooming your dyes before making the bath bombs, you can have brighter and bolder colors.
Now that you know the answer to “what does blooming mean in bath bombs,” you can learn how to bloom dyes. We’ll walk you through this process of blooming your dyes for when you make your next batch of bath bombs!
1. Boil a kettle or pot of water. You don’t need a lot of water. There should be enough to have at least 1 fluid once left after boiling.
2. Measure out 3 cups of baking soda and set it to the side.
3. In a small container, add a 1/4 teaspoon of water-soluble dye. Using a clear container works best.
4. Transfer 1 fluid once of boiled water to the container with the dye. Mix the water and dye until the powdered dye has completely dissolved. Add more water or dye as necessary.
5. Add the dye water mixture to the baking soda. Mix the two substances using your hands (while wearing gloves) or with a standing mixer. You want the color to be evenly distributed throughout the baking soda.
6. After the mixture is colored uniformly, transfer it to a baking sheet. Spread the mixture evenly across the sheet and set it aside to dry. This process takes between 24-48 hours, depending on the size of your batch. DO NOT use until completely dry or you risk activating the dye when you make the bath bomb.
7. After drying, use the mixture in place of your baking soda for the bath bombs.
As you can see, the process of blooming your bath bomb dyes is relatively fast and easy. It doesn’t take a lot of preparation or time. If you mix the dye with your hands, be sure to wear a pair of rubber gloves to avoid staining. Another tip, be sure the mixture is completely dry. We don’t want your hard work to go to waste when you start making the bath bombs.
The only benefit you get from blooming your dyes is brighter colors when using the bath bomb. That said, blooming is not a necessary step in your process. You can get plenty of comfort from using unaltered dyes for your bath bomb experience.
